Fulbourn II vs. Romsey Town

Saturday, June 10, 2000

Romsey Town (129 all out; 35.1 overs)
Fulbourn II (106 all out; 39.4 overs)
by 23 runs.

A red letter day indeed. Firstly, it was the birthday of one Alfie Wilmshusrt, the most ebullient memeber of the team. Secondly, we managed to defend a disastrously small total.

Although the pitch at Fulbourn (lovely setting, incidentally) certainly wasn't easy to bat on, both turning and staying low, we really should have got more than 129. Andy Owen continued to lead from the front, top scoring with 30-odd not out, but was justifiably angry that we didn't even bat out our forty overs.

However it was a different story when we were out in the field. We fielded well, held catches, bowled a good line, and got wickets at regular intervals. Even so, Fulbourn was making enough runs to be in contention . . . at least until the birthday boy came on and bagged a very quick 5/21-ish -- he would have been man of the match even if it hadn't been his thirty-eighth birthday . . .
